Things you must do before disassembling your laptop

There is a significant difference in the design concept of laptops from 2012 to 2013 and 2018 and later. This difference in design often makes people ignore the importance of powering off when disassembling.

In laptops from 2012 to 2014, most devices are equipped with external batteries, and the battery must be removed before removing the back cover. Therefore, users who have used these old laptops often habitually ignore the power-off link when disassembling new models.

ThinkPad has experienced a transition from “dual batteries” to “internal single battery”, while other brands have mostly transitioned directly from external single batteries to internal single batteries.

Since 2019, the battery design style has basically stabilized, so most of the new laptops now use internal batteries, only a few gaming laptops and workstations still use external batteries, and the design of internal and external dual batteries has almost disappeared.

Since most devices are now equipped with built-in batteries, it is particularly important to disconnect the power supply when disassembling the device. If you only rely on past experience and do not pay special attention to disconnecting the battery, it is easy to operate while the device is powered. This may cause minor damage, such as burning EC, damaging capacitors and resistors, and in severe cases, it may even burn out the screen or CPU.

Cutting off the power is only the first step in disassembling the machine. There are slight differences in the disassembly methods of different models. For example, the X280 model can remove the D-shell directly from the screen axis by loosening the screws, while the X390, which is one generation apart, needs to loosen the D-side screws first, then turn the screen axis toward yourself, apply force from the bottom of the D-shell, and pull out the D-shell instead of directly opening it.

This is because a latch design is added inside the D-shell of the X390, which makes it impossible to directly lift it up and must be pulled out. In addition, the 2242 hard drive screws of the X1 Carbon 2018 are easy to slip, so you need to use a larger cross screwdriver to apply pressure before twisting. These details are different.

When disassembling a laptop, it is recommended to disconnect the battery power first. There are two ways to disconnect the battery: one is to turn off the power supply in the BIOS, and the other is to unscrew the bottom case screws and remove the battery first, then handle other components.
